JNPT records highest ever traffic of 4.8 million TEUs
- Container cargo handled up at 7.4 percent
- DPD share up at 39.15 percent
JNPT, the premier container port in the country added yet another feather to its cap by clocking the highest volume of cargo handled with 4.8 million TEUs for the year ended March
31, 2018. The record performance comes on the back of 4.5 million TEUs handled in the previous financial year. JNPT has been registering a continuous uptick in the traffic handled over the past few quarters and has registered 7.4 growth in container cargo volume during this financial year.
Total liquid cargo volume handled during this year stood at 7.18 million tonnes reflecting 5.98 percent growth over the last financial year.
JNPT has five container terminals and the break-up of container cargo indicated that Gateway Terminal handled 2.03 million TEUs, port-owned JNPCT handled 1.48 million TEUs, NSIGT and NSICT together handled 1.30 million TEUs and the newly opened BMCTPL accounted for 23,212 TEUs.
JNPT has been consistently improving its volume and turnover by implementing many trade friendly measures. Several steps under ease of doing business and introduction of Direct Port Delivery (DPD) system have substantially contributed in saving of logistics cost and time for the trade. It is heartening to note that trade has started increasingly accepting DPD mode and its share has gone up to 39.15 percent. The innovative transport solution is offering twin benefits of saving in time and cost.
Speaking on the event announcing the performance, Shri. Gopal Krishna, Secretary, Ministry of Shipping congratulated JNPT and all the terminal operators and said “The government is focused in creating value for the trade by reducing the logistics cost and time and DPD will assist this process. He also said that all stakeholders should come together and provide more synergy in achieving this goal”.
Commenting on the port’s overall performance, Shri Neeraj Bansal, Chairman-in-Charge, JNPT said, “I want to congratulate all stakeholders and EXIM community for extending great support and enable the port in achieving the record volume. JNPT is in the midst of carrying out many trade-friendly measures which will facilitate ease of doing business. Continuous support and encouragement from Shri Nitin Gadkari, Honorable Minister of Shipping and from Ministry of Shipping will further guide us in achieving higher goals”.
In March, Inter-Terminal Movement of TTs was availed by 5,42,325 trucks completing 6,72,029 transactions resulting in a total saving of Rs 162 crore to the trade since the start of this initiative.
JNPT is continuously upgrading and expanding its facilities to meet the growing demand. The expansion of container berth and other facilities at JN Port, development of fourth container terminal, deepening and widening of Mumbai Harbour channel and JN Port Channel, Widening of NH-4B, SH-54 and Amra Marg to 6/8 lanes, Modernization of Cargo Handling Equipment, development of dry ports, satellite port are some of the steps under implementation which will further change the face of JNPT to become the port of call for EXIM trade in India, Shri Bansal added.
The event was attended by all JNPT Terminal operators- GTI, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCTPL, representatives from Railways, CONCOR, MANSA, CSLA, CFSAI, BCBA and other dignitaries.
