Toyota – Kamarajar Port pact for exporting automobiles

kamarajar portKamarajar Port Limited has signed an agreement with Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd for export of automobile units by making use of the port’s facilities.

It is expected the automaker would export around 100,000 vehicles from the port in the next three years.

According to a PIB release, the agreement was signed in the presence of Union minister of Shipping Nitin Gadkari and minister of state for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan in New Delhi. MA Bhaskarachar, chairman and managing director, Kamarajar Port informed in the next three years Toyoto alone is expected to export around one lakh vehicles.

In the last four years, around 700,000 cars had been exported from the port. To boost export of automobiles, the port is planning to expand its yard capacity to handle more capacity at the existing berth besides planning to set up a new berth, which is expected to be ready by September.

Some of the major auto brands availing services at the port include Nissan, Ford, Renault, and Ashok Leyland.

As per the agreement in place for 10 years, the original equipment manufacturers will commit to use the port as their primary facility and the port will give volume-based discounted tariff on certain facilities.

Kamarajar Port is one among the 12 Major Ports, developed as Land Lord Port. It was the first corporate port set up by the Government.

Kamarajar Port has a General Cargo Berth (GCB) under its control to handle automobile units. It is RORO berth (Roll on Roll off) where the cars are directly driven into the vessel. The Berth is having a draught of 10 meters and capable of accommodating all types of Car Carriers.

The Port has also developed a large car parking yard of 1,41,000 sq.m. with a capacity to park 10,000 cars, in addition to parking of 2,000 cars at the Berth while loading. Additional parking yard is also being developed to facilitate parking of additional 4,000 cars with all facilities.
